green eggs and ham
3:35 PM
this is for your typical misfit
every drama geek
all those chess freak
for the ones who ate lunch at the trophy case
but more so for the misfit who never fit as missing
who fit but missed out on everything
the one by the knight because
maybe
that's where her friends are
we all don't fit
and we all aren't fit
and we're all throwing fits cause we don't
we all missed first, and we'll all sluff fourth, and i could think of 1,000 plus chances who didn't make it past second
we would be shocked to know how many people at this school are up to their knees in their families depression, and up their neck in their own
i know, it's "senior year" and we can't help now cuz, it's all over
but you know, that guy in green eggs and ham didn't ever try something new till the very last page,
and it changed everything.
why can't we change everything.
god gave us enough battles we could handle till here
for some it's the neck
or the knees
or the ankles
but however high the blood and salt water,
it's bound to kill us all
we're bound to kill us all
so why not drown in these torn-dirty-wet-blankets together
let's drown in friday night dances and 100% attendance
let's buy fancy black dresses and tuxs to match, and if you can't pay, don't worry, i think i have something you could borrow
let's tell the sophomores they're good enough
and the juniors they're strong enough
because we all know the pain from the beginning
is so far from the pain of the end
let's enroll our kids in writing classes and our kid's kids in writing classes then let's read their journals to find out high school, was so high, it could never be ranked something 4.0
so please,
just try them,
sam i am,
here
or there
or anywhere
in a box
with a fox
with a mouse
in a house
the place,
or the time,
never mattered.

I'm talking to you right now and I'm going to let you know how good this was but I'm going to let you know here as well. Goodness. This made me so happy. And I loved your picture choice.

ReplyDeleteI know, it's "senior year" and to not give a shit is the definition
But that guy in green eggs and ham didn't try anything new until the very last page
And it changed everything "
This is solid gold
ummm YA
ReplyDeleteI love everything you write
and this is no exception <3
I keep thinking things can't get better.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant use of Dr. Seuss. (That rhymed, and this whole post rhymes with everything I want for you seniors. Perfect rhyme, no slant rhyme.)
I read this twice. And I'm far too busy to read anything twice.
DeleteThree times a lady.
DeleteFour times. I need to move on with my life.
DeleteYou read this at SFYS and it was easily one of the best pieces of the night. That line about the last line and how it changed everything and how we can change everything...well, that might be the most important thing an 18-year-old LP student has ever said. But I don't know.
I swear, I'm moving on now.
Wow this is Incredible.
ReplyDeleteMakes me want to eat green eggs and ham.
That's always been my fav dr Seuss book. And I also read it twice.
Gives perspective, amazing as always!
ReplyDeleteCan we please? 'And it changed everything'

ReplyDeleteI'm so obsessed with these words....I'm pretty sure I think about them every day and I'm SO GLAD nelson gave me the link to this poem (and consequently this blog) so I can include it in our SFY book of joy and glory and life-changing words. Bless you forever.
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is embarassing I'm reading your blog over a year after your last post. But I'm alone and you just made me feel better. And your writing made someone smile and cry this long after it got posted. So sorry if I'm weird for still liking your blog so much, but please know, if you ever see this, it's still doing things.
